Welding is job that needs to be performed carefully and with precision during the construction process in order to prevent major disasters. In this technique, an arc is formed between tungsten electrode and the metal that is to be welded. Tungsten electrode is non-consumable so it does not burn up in the process. A filler metal is used optionally as and when required and is inserted manually. A shielding gas, typically argon or helium is used to protect the metal being welded and the tungsten. All sorts of atmospheric contaminations and oxidation are avoided and a clean weld is formed.

All industrial sectors use the TIG welding technique for high quality welds. TIG welding may be carried out with or without the filler metal. A TIG weld is free from spatter and distortion. Gaining control over the heat is far easier using this method. The main advantage of TIG welding is that, as compared to any other welding technique, it can be used with a large number of metals and can be applied to many structural processes. Other benefits are that no sparks, smoke or fumes are produced during the process. This is due to the fact that the filler metal is utilised in small quantities when needed. TIG welds may be used in flat, horizontal or vertical positions and is an ideal technique for curved surfaces.

TIG welding is most effective for pipe fabrications. For their use in power generation plants, nuclear, pharmaceutical or food industries, a higher level of proficiency is required in welding pipes.
